Clean Water Grant, Water Authority of Dickson County Recipient: Water Authority of Dickson County, Dickson County, Tennessee Amount requested: $250,000 Project description: The introduction of disinfected, clean public water into communities is well correlated with longevity, improved health, and aesthetic advantages. In addition to aspects of purity and health protection, fluoride added by a water district promotes dental health, especially among those who enjoy the public water supply from childhood. WADC has three stable sources of water from which to treat, facilitating one of the most reliable public water supplies in the State of Tennessee and serving customers who have experienced dry or contaminated wells in recent years. Despite the numerous advantages of the public water supply, water line extension is an increasingly costly project. In rural areas, population density is often insufficient to render the extension economical for the rural customers who may share its cost. Similarly, WADC frequently finds itself unable to fund costly lines that benefit only a few customers. Supplemental funding is critical to supplying public water to portions of the WADC service area for which an economic business model alone does not support it. The protection of public health is a primary function of government. |
