Introduction
Our interns are college students performing services in Rep. John F. Tierney's Congressional offices on a temporary basis incidental to the pursuit of the individual's educational objectives. Some interns receive no compensation from any source, while some receive compensation from an educational institution or other sponsoring entity.
While interning in Rep. Tierney's office, students should expect to gain experience in Administrative Support, Legislative Research, Constituent Services, and Constituent Correspondence.
Eligibility
To apply, students must be enrolled in a College or University in the Sixth District of Massachusetts or, if attending an institution outside the district, be a resident of the Sixth District.
Qualifications
Interns must possess good oral and written communication skills; work cooperatively and courteously with others; possess good organizational skills and type a minimum of 45 words per minute; and be responsible, dependable, and willing to learn.
Responsibilities
Interns will perform research; sort and distribute mail; attend committee meetings, briefings, intern conferences, and seminars as assigned; perform data entry; answer telephones; record constituent opinions and relevant information; greet visitors; and perform other duties as assigned.
Positions
In Washington, D.C., Rep. Tierney will fill up to five unpaid positions, varying from 10-15 hours per week for the Fall and Winter/Spring Sessions. The Summer Session will fill 4 unpaid positions for 20 hours per week. Positions are also available in the Peabody District Office.
Hours will be set in both offices based on the needs of the office with every effort made to accommodate the intern's class and/or work schedule. Once agreed upon, however, the intern will be required to keep regular office hours. Any adjustments to the schedule will require advance approval from the District Director or Intern Coordinator.
Housing
Although interns will be responsible for making their own housing arrangements, the office will provide information on intern housing options in the D.C. area for the summer.
