Tierney Announces $42,560 Federal Grant
for Town of Nahant
Peabody, MA - Working to assist local communities, Representative John F. Tierney (D-Salem) today announced that the Nahant Fire Department has secured a $42,560 Department of Homeland Security Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) for the Town of Nahant to purchase new life-saving equipment.
“It is critical that we provide firefighters and other first responders with the resources they need to protect our community. I am very pleased to announce that the Town of Nahant has been awarded this federal grant money to upgrade their equipment,” said Rep. Tierney.
The Town of Nahant will use the federal grant money to purchase new equipment - boots, pants, jackets and hoods - for the 28 people who work for the fire department on a full time or volunteer basis.
“We are very happy to have this additional funding,” said Nahant Fire Chief Robert Ward. “Some of our existing equipment is over 15 years old and we are very pleased to have the opportunity to replace this equipment.”
The Assistance to Fire Fighters Grant Program (AFGP) awards one-year grants directly to fire departments to improve the effectiveness of firefighting operations, firefighter health and safety programs, and to establish or expand fire prevention programs throughout the United States.
“At a time when budgets are tight on the federal, state and local level, I am delighted that the Town of Nahant presented such a strong grant application in a very competitive environment for federal funds,” concluded Tierney.
