Fred joins Kalamazoo Transportation Director Bill Schomisch to
underscore the importance of public transit in the wake of record fuel
prices. The U.S. House recently approved legislation to provide a
financial boost to public transit systems, ensuring reliable and
affordable transportation for working Americans. “Public transit and
Amtrak are vital to our community as they provide students, seniors and
working folks affordable and reliable transportation. Providing a boost
to public transit is an important step, but we owe it to working
families to pursue long-term solutions to achieve energy independence
with American-made energy,” said Upton during the press conference.

Fred visits with a local student aboard one of Kalamazoo’s Metro Transit’s buses during the morning commute. The young man is a student at KVCC and relies upon the transit service four times a day. To address the strain caused by rising fuel costs on public transit, the U.S. House approved legislation on June 26th by a vote of 322 to 98 to provide a financial boost to public transit systems to ensure that they will continue to provide reliable and affordable transportation to working Americans.

Kalamazoo office. Fred presented Captain Hoose, a veteran of Operation
Iraqi Freedom and true American hero, the Purple Heart, Combat
Infantryman Badge and Bronze Star Medal “V” for exceptionally valorous
conduct in the line of fire. Captain Hoose, who comes from a family
rich in military tradition, was joined by his grandfather (pictured

Fred joins Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell and Governor Jennifer Granholm
for the launch of the Patriot hospital bed for veterans, the product of
a collaborative effort between Stryker and Alliant Healthcare Products,
a veteran-owned small business medical device company in Richland. The
Patriot beds were “designed by veterans, for veterans.” The beds have
unique design features to reduce caretaker back stress, prevent patient
falls, and to make the beds easy for patients and caregivers to adjust.
This important product will greatly assist in the care for the men and
women who have been injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.
