Upton Praises President’s Comments on Economy, Call to Make Tax Cuts Permanent

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Fred Upton (R-St. Joseph) released the following statement in response to President Bush’s State of the Union address:

“I applaud the President for highlighting the most important issue facing Michigan, the economy, right out of the gate in his eighth and final State of the Union address.  Michigan’s economy has struggled for many years, and we must do all we can to help stabilize small businesses, create jobs and provide further relief to hardworking families.

“The President’s efforts to reach a bipartisan economic stimulus package is a positive first step in shoring up the economy and we are united in his charge to approve a streamlined bill, free from any unnecessary pork barrel projects.

“But, as the President highlighted, we cannot stop at the stimulus package – we must make permanent the 2001 tax cuts that provided a helping hand to working families throughout the nation.  If the tax cuts are allowed to expire, we will be confronted with the largest tax increase in U.S. history, and our economy will be stressed even further.

“This evening, every soul in the House chamber stood united with the President as he closed his remarks praising our courageous troops on the frontlines defending freedom and liberty.  We all are grateful for the sacrifices made by all of our servicemen and women and their families, and our thoughts and prayers for a safe return home continue to be with them each and every day.”
