Upton Comments on General Motors
Co-chair of Congressional Auto Caucus worked to avoid bankruptcy
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Fred Upton (R-St. Joseph), co-chair of the Congressional Auto Caucus, made the following statement today following General Motors' announcement that it was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
"There is no escaping that GM's bankruptcy will be devastating for countless Michigan families and communities who have already been pushed to the brink. Mothers and fathers, sons and daughters who are their families' breadwinners will soon be without a job.
"Michigan's families will shoulder much of the burden, but the shockwave will be felt well beyond Michigan and the Rust Belt as thousands of dealers and mom-and-pop suppliers are forced to shutter across the nation.
"We all hope a healthier, stronger GM emerges from bankruptcy - the sooner the better. We must swiftly get GM back in business, and get the U.S. government out of the business of running GM at the taxpayers' expense."
