  • July 1, 2008 -- Congresswoman Velázquez Announces Federal Resources to Benefit Red Hook Green Roof Design Initiative: In a ceremony today Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-N.Y.) announced support from the U.S. Department of Energy for the implementation of a green roof initiative in Brooklyn.  The Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation (SBIDC) will use the resources to create a 12,500 sq. ft. garden atop a Red Hook factory.  This effort will demonstrate that green roof design has cost-effective, environmental benefits and should be implemented in future projects

  • May 19, 2008 -- Congresswoman Velázquez Presents $188,000 in Federal Funds to Brooklyn Arts Council for New Public School Programs: During a celebration of the arts held at Bushwick’s P.S. 257 elementary school, Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-N.Y.) today presented the Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC) with a check in the amount of $188,000 from the U.S. Department of Justice. The federal funding will be used to expand arts education in six public schools in the Bushwick and Red Hook communities.

  • May 15, 2008 -- Congresswoman Velázquez Calls on USAID to Send Rescue Teams for Victims of Chinese Earthquake: On Monday, May 12, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck the Sichuan Province of China. The death toll has quickly climbed to more than 12,000, and with thousands remaining buried in rubble it is only expected to rise further. Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) today sent a letter to the U. S. Agency for International Development (USAID) urging the nation's economic and humanitarian assistance agency to immediately dispatch rescue teams to the area.
  • May 14, 2008 -- Congresswoman Velázquez: Farm Bill Will Help New York Families Deal with Rising Food Costs: The U.S. House of Representatives this afternoon approved H.R. 2419, "The Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008." Serving as a conferee on the final Farm Bill package, Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) advocated for the good of New York City. Nearly three-fourths of the 2008 Farm Bill, an additional $10.4 billion in new spending, goes to nutrition programs that will help New Yorkers afford healthy food.

Congresswoman Velázquez Earns Number One Ranking as Most Progressive Member of New York City Delegation


National JournalCongresswoman Velázquez has been recognized by the National Journal for her progressive voice in fighting the Bush Administration. She earned the magazine's ranking as the most progressive member of New York City's Congressional delegation. The National Journal ranks members of Congress every year based on key votes on economic, social and foreign policy issues. Crucial issues addressed last year included raising the minimum wage and providing a timetable for the withdrawal of troops in Iraq. Congresswoman Velázquez will continue her work in the U.S. House as an advocate for the causes most important to New Yorkers.
