Physical education measure boosted by Wamp, Simmons
July 25 –
Decked out in a red rhinestone-jeweled tank-top patterned with stars and stripes, fitness celebrity Richard Simmons held court on Capitol Hill as he urged support for a bill sponsored by Rep. Zach Wamp, to boost physical education classes in public schools. “By taking action to increase physical activity and reduce obesity amongst our youth, we can improve academic performance, decrease medical costs and save lives,” said Rep. Wamp, a co-founder of the Congressional Fitness Caucus.

Energy lesson for U.S. should begin at home

June 15 – We can only help lower the price of gasoline by implementing an all-of-the-above approach that increases American-made energy, decreases our dependence on foreign oil and creates jobs here at home in the process. The world needs to see us proactively moving toward energy independence, and the best way we can do it is to deploy the technologies and capitalize on our free-enterprise system to solve these problems.

ORNL wins White House award
June 24
The Green Transportation Initiative at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has received a White House “Closing the Circle Award,” recognizing outstanding federal environmental stewardship practices. “ORNL is making a meaningful reduction in its petroleum consumption,” U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp said. “The Green Transportation Initiative is an excellent model for other federal agencies to follow in an effort to reduce our use of foreign oil, and demonstrates that the federal government can create new practices that the private sector can follow.”

TN urges FDA to protect state’s tomato producers
July 8– In a joint letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Tennessee congressional delegation has requested that the FDA “quickly determine the [salmonellosis] outbreak’s source and effectively eliminate the contaminated tomatoes from our food supply without hurting the producers whose products are still safe.” Congressman Zach Wamp said: “The public needs to know that Tennessee-grown tomatoes are safe to eat. The FDA has confirmed this. We are working to get out the word that these Tennessee products are still safe.”

Ocoee River Gorge Road must balance business, environmental interest
March 4 – Moving forward with the development of an east-west transportation connector between southeast Tennessee and western North Carolina was the major topic discussed at the 14th Annual Ocoee Stakeholders meeting at the Ocoee Whitewater Center. Congressman Zach Wamp said Corridor K will open up the Cumberland Plateau when it is completed in 24 months. “This is not a notion from Mars,” Wamp said. “It’s already being done.”

GOP Overcomes Deficit, Wins 11-10
July 21 – It wasn’t as easy as in years past, but Republicans continued their baseball dominance in the 47th Annual Roll Call Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park, coming from behind for an 11-10 walk-off win to sweep the best-of-five series and retire yet another coveted Roll Call trophy. The 47th edition of the summer classic was the second in a row to remain competitive throughout but the first in a long while to display such drama. “I think, frankly, the Democrats have gotten better,” Wamp said. “We’re going to have our hands full next year.”

July 20 – Late in the annual Congressional Baseball Game, the Democrats took a 4-3 lead and appeared on the verge of their first victory over their Republican rivals since 2000. "The Democrats deserved to win the game," Rep. Zach Wamp, the Republican shortstop who had two hits, told the Roll Call newspaper, the sponsor of the game. "I've played for 12 years, and this was the best baseball game I've played in."
