Jefferson County is located in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains and has a proud history, spanning over 200 years. The county was formed in 1793 from Greene and Hawkins counties and named in honor of President Thomas Jefferson. Possessing diverse recreational resources, Jefferson County has something to offer almost anyone. The county courthouse, built in 1845, is one of the oldest in the state of Tennessee. It contains the County Museum as well as the County Archives, which has documents dating back to the late 1700's, including the marriage bond of frontiersman Davy Crockett. The City of Dandridge is the only town in the United States named for the first First Lady, Martha Dandridge Washington, wife of President George Washington.
