House of Representatives requests additional renewable energy funding
December 15 – Eighty members of the U.S. House of Representatives recently sent President Bush a letter seeking funding for renewable energy and energy efficiency in the White House's fiscal 2008 budget request for the U.S. Department of Energy. Circulated by Representatives Mark Udall, D-Colo., and Zach Wamp, R-Tenn., the letter notes that "renewable energy and energy efficiency can have the longest lasting positive effect on availability, stable prices and greenhouse gas emissions."

November 30 – The Tennessee Valley Authority on Thursday approved a policy to stop selling protected shoreline along the Tennessee River system for residential and commercial development. Some, including U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp worry the ban is too restrictive and will have a "substantial adverse impact" on the region.

Zach Wamp intends to offer legislation in January that would require candidates to sign off on political advertisements run on their behalf by national party committees. “If you’re in one of these highly targeted seats like Tennessee, you get to see the underbelly of our campaign system,” said the Tennessee Republican, who has watched the national party committees attack Democratic Rep. Harold E. Ford Jr., and former Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker.

TVA ban blocks Watts Bar development
October 24 – Congressman Zach Wamp met with members of the Watts Bar Development Authority from Rhea and Meigs counties Thursday to discuss ways to overcome TVA's moratorium on residential development of TVA land. Wamp said the proceeds from the sale of the TVA land for the multi-use development could be used to extend water lines to unserved areas of Rhea and Meigs counties and to provide other needed services.

October 16 – Last year more than $10 million went to Tennessee from two victims assistance programs started by the 1984 federal law. October 4 – A military medic for years, Major Donald Spradlin survived a tour in Iraq, "Pulling people out of Humvees and doing courageous work to save people," said brother Ronald. But back stateside, Spradlin fell victim to a car crash Tracy City. Homeland Security, GOP struggling with security endgame

September 21 – House GOP leaders met Wednesday to try to bridge their differences over a provision in the FY07 Homeland Security appropriations bill allowing U.S. citizens to bring prescription drugs across the Canadian border. Lawmakers are also trying to find common ground on attaching chemical security legislation to the bill. Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee is drafting their own language for the legislation, Rep. Zach Wamp, said appropriators also have differences over the funding formula for homeland security grants.

August 31 – Rep. Zach Wamp presented the Bronze Star to Sergeant James R. Carson. The Bronze Star is the third highest medal a vet can receive. It was an emotional day for the 86-year-old James Carson. His family says he rarely speaks of fighting during the D-Day Invasion and liberating Nazi concentration camps. That's why Wamp presented Carson with the Bronze Star and eight other medals.

Tennessee marks school desegregation

August 21 – Fifty years ago, Bobby Cain and 11 other black students walked down a steep hill past hundreds of taunting, angry white people to Clinton High School. On Thursday, the city will premiere a 90-minute documentary titled "The Clinton 12" narrated by James Earl Jones. Rep. Zach Wamp will mark the 50th anniversary by opening a museum devoted to the event.

July 23 – Congressional districts have been drawn to favor the incumbents. In response, Rep. John Tanner would like to change the law. Under the Fairness and Independence in Redistricting Act, independent commissions would be created to design each state's district map and prohibit mid-decade redistricting. Rep. July 20 Legislation to bar federal courts from ruling on constitutional issues arising from the Pledge of Allegiance, including the "one nation, under God" reference, passed the House after lawmakers argued that the pledge is linked to the nation's spiritual history. Bill would alter how districts are drawn
July 19 – Tennessee lawmakers are pushing legislation that would overhaul the way congressional districts are drawn. Rep. John Tanner is leading the charge in the House with a bill that would set up bipartisan commissions in each state that would draw redistricting maps. Rep. Zach Wamp is one of just two House Republicans publicly supporting the bill.

Study OK’d to look at ‘Trail’ addition

July 19 – The House approved a study that could lead to 1,400 more officially marked miles along the “Trail of Tears” that American Indians marched to Oklahoma during the 1830s. The bill that passed was sponsored by Rep. Zach Wamp. It requires the National Park Service to conduct a six-month study of adding two other routes the Cherokees took through Arkansas and Tennessee to Oklahoma.

The administration's plan is seen as virtually dead after the Senate Appropriations Committee, following the lead of its House counterpart, refused last week to include the proposal in an appropriations bill. July 7 – In 1838, the United States government forcibly removed more than 16,000 Cherokee Indians from their homelands in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, relocating them to areas now called Oklahoma; hundreds died during the trip and thousands more perished shortly afterward. Rep. Zach Wamp recently introduced legislation expanding the trail to parts of Tennessee and several other states.

Wamp said the shot wouldn’t have left the notoriously cavernous Robert F. A major issue on the agenda for the subcommittee is federal disaster response in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Rep. May 8 – Rep. Zach Wamp is calling for Georgia and Alabama to help Chattanooga land a $2.5 billion Toyota plant that could create 1,000 jobs. Rep. Zach Wamp said Friday he thinks the three states should work together to attract Toyota and other major manufacturers to an industrial park near Chattanooga.

May 4 That Oak Ridge area of Roane County may also be the site of a new, huge ethanol-generating plant, if federal loan guarantees can be secured for about $20 million of its start-up costs. The company with the technology patents to produce ethanol from coal and from waste products, including garbage, paper and plastics, has the support of Rep. Zach Wamp.

Company considers Tennessee ethanol plant

May 2 – Officials in Tennessee say an energy development company with an arm in Fayetteville, Arkansas, is considering a former uranium-enrichment plant at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, as the site for an ethanol-production facility. World War II Hero Receives Medals
April 21 – More than 60 years after he fought in World War II, a Chattanooga man gets his military honors. 84-year-old Grady Butler helped storm the beach at Normandy and got injured later on in his tour. One of his grand-daughters contacted Rep. Zach Wamp's office staff. They looked into it. Friday, Wamp officially awarded Butler nine medals.

Ninety hours of Bible reading to hit the Hill
April 19 – From Sunday, April 30, to Thursday, May 4, Capitol Hill will be the site of a 90-hour marathon Bible reading. The event will culminate with the National Day of Prayer. Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers have participated in years past and have included highly religious representatives such as Rep. Zach Wamp.

But Sheriff Shultz was nowhere to be found.

April 3 – A horse drawn carriage led Desmond Doss' casket passed hundreds of on-lookers up to the pavillion inside Chattanooga National Cemetery. Rep. Zach Wamp stood among them to help give the World War II veteran a final tribute, "An unbelievable, selfless man. He put it all on the line for us. So we're here to honor his life."

Land sale comment period extended
March 31 – The government is proposing to sell more than 304-thousand acres, three thousand of them are in Tennessee. The government hopes to get $800 million from the sale for rural public schools, firefighting equipment and personnel, and roads in counties with a lot of public lands. The plan has drawn sharp criticism from Tennessee politicians, including Rep. Zach Wamp.

March 18 – Rep. Zach Wamp introduced a bill that would give the Benge and Bell routes national trail status. He also wants to add to the trail as-yet-undermined stretches of northern Georgia and western North Carolina where the government rounded up Cherokees. February 26 – The Tennessee Valley Authority has reached an agreement with whitewater outfitters to set water levels and schedules for the next 13 years on the Upper Ocoee River. The contract with the nation's largest public utility — which is part of an economic development and tourism effort — was announced Friday by U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp, R-Tenn., at a meeting at the Ocoee Whitewater Center.

January 15 – Rep. Zach Wamp pointed out that federal spending on veterans’ healthcare increased $1.7 billion over last year and is up 18 percent over the past two years. The additional money helped fund a new diagnostic imaging center at the Veterans Administration outpatient clinic in Chattanooga that Wamp helped dedicate on Wednesday. “That imaging center is really cutting edge; it will be the envy of the private sector,” he said.
