Wexler Calls for Congressional Investigation into State Farm's Outrageous and Improper Requested Rate Hikes
Today, Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) called for a congressional investigation into State Farm, the largest private property insurer in the state of Florida, following reports that the company asked the state for 47.1% rate increase on homeowner policies.  If State Farm’s requested 47.1% increase is enacted, 1 million Floridians – including over 177,000 people in Broward, Palm Beach, and Miami-Dade counties – will face enormous rate increases.

“These requested rate hikes are unacceptable, and are not consistent with the realities of the conditions in Florida. This improper request by State Farm warrants an immediate investigation by Congress into possible abusive business practices. I trust that the State of Florida will thoroughly examine this matter and believe Congress must also play a significant role to ensure that consumers are protected nationwide, particularly given the inappropriate behavior of insurance companies following Hurricane Katrina.

“For too long, I have seen the homeowners’ insurance rates of my constituents double and triple -- even when they have not made in a claim in years,” said Congressman Wexler.  “Now, when Florida has not been hit by a major hurricane in two years, State Farm’s requested adjustments could further spike insurance policies for South Florida families ...read more

House Republicans Block Drill Act
Today, Congressman Wexler voted for the Drill Act, which would bring 10.6 billion barrels of oil immediately to American consumers by requiring oil companies to being producing oil from acres of land already leased.  The legislation would have allowed other companies to take over these leases if the oil company currently in possession failed to begin oil production.

The Drill Act would have also required the Administration to oversee the construction of a pipeline from these Alaskan reserves for the transport of oil and gas to the lower 48 states.  The pipeline project would have created an estimated 10,000 new jobs.  In addition, the legislation banned the export of this American-made energy, reserving resources for here at home.  Unfortunately, House Republicans blocked the Drill Act, which required a two-thirds vote of support in order to pass.

"Oil companies are actively holding 10.6 billion barrels of oil hostage from the American people and this legislation would have required them to begin production immediately,” said Congressman Wexler. “While House Republicans claim they want to increase domestic supply of oil and gas to the market, by blocking this legislation they took a hard stand against the development of our domestic resources.  ...read more

Wexler "Again" Urges Bush to Designate Hamas' al-Aqsa TV as a Terrorist Entity
(Washington, DC) Today, Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL), a senior member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and a member of the Middle East and South Asia Subcommittee, praised the passage of House Resolution 1069, a resolution condemning Middle East media that incites violence against Americans and the United States and our ally Israel, in the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The resolution specifically calls on President Bush to designate al-Aqsa TV, which is run by the terrorist organization Hamas, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) entity.  Wexler, along with forty-one of his colleagues, including the lead sponsor of H. Res. 1069, Congressman Joe Crowley (D-NY), sent a strongly worded letter to the Bush Administration on June 27, 2008 urging the President to add al-Aqsa to the SDGT.

“Passage of this resolution in the Foreign Affairs Committee is critical to Congressional efforts to designate al-Aqsa as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) entity.  It is time for the Bush Administration to take the next step and add al-Aqsa to the SDGT and build on international efforts to have this television station removed from satellite providers broadcasting globally,” said Congressman Wexler.

“It is clear that al-Aqsa television serves as the ...read more
