Wexler Votes to Expand Domestic Oil Production, Invest in Renewable Energy Solutions
(Washington, DC) Today, Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) released the following statement on the passage of the Comprehensive American Energy Security and Taxpayer Protection Act in the House of Representatives:

“Oil companies have been taking advantage of American-owned resources by enjoying excessive tax-payer funded subsidies and record profits from prices at the pump. President Bush and Republicans have been handing our tax dollars over to oil executives and ultimately hindering our goal of energy independence, and today, Congress stood up to end this unconscionable practice.

“Many Americans have called for an expansion of domestic oil production, and this legislation responsibly answers that call. At the same time, it also ensures that Americans actually receive a fair return from increased drilling, because our nation’s energy future rests on our ability to develop renewable, and affordable, energy solutions.

“America’s economy is in turmoil. In Florida and across the country, rising unemployment is devastating our communities.  This legislation will spur job creation and economic growth by creating thousands of jobs here at home in the renewable energy industry. Under this plan, businesses are offered valuable financial incentives to create solar, wind, geothermal, and other alternative energy technologies.

“I truly believe this energy package ...read more

Wexler Expresses Strong Support for Georgia Humanitarian Aid Bill
Urges Russia to remove its troops from Georgia and fully implement ceasefire obligations

(Washington, DC) Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL), Chairman of the Europe Subcommittee in the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, expressed his strong support for the Stand for Georgia Act of 2008 (H.R. 6911), legislation authorizing close to $500 million in critical humanitarian aid to the Republic of Georgia, which was attacked by Russian forces in August.  H.R. 6911 passed by a strong majority during a vote today in the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.  The legislation also expresses strong support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, condemns Russia’s illegal recognition of the breakaway regions of S. Ossetia and Abkhazia, and calls on Moscow to withdraw all of its troops to their pre-conflict positions. Congressman Wexler is an original sponsor of H.R. 6911.

“I strongly support this legislation, which is a clear signal of America’s support for the Georgian people as they rebuild their nation following Russia’s devastating military invasion in August. It is essential that the United States, our allies in Europe and the international community meet the humanitarian needs of Georgians and provide aid that will assist this fledgling democracy on its path towards democracy and ...read more

Foreign Affairs Committee Statement from Congressman Robert Wexler on US-Russia Relations in the Aftermath of the Georgia Crisis:
Chairman Berman, I want to thank you for holding today’s hearing. I also want to welcome Assistant Secretary Dan Fried. I have great respect for Ambassador Fried who is one of our nation’s finest diplomats.

I want to join you in strongly condemning the Russian government’s military invasion into Georgia on August 8 – which has resulted in the needless deaths of countless Georgians, led to thousands of internally displaced refugees, and caused the destruction of numerous cities, ports and infrastructure.
The gross human rights violations committed by the Russian military or carried out under their watch is unacceptable and in violation of international law. I was appalled by the indiscriminate and disproportionate force used by the Russian military which unconscionably targeted and killed noncombatant Georgian civilians.

Russia’s decision to “punish Georgia” by trampling on its sovereignty and territorial integrity has raised the ugly specter of a Soviet Union style power grab and has created an atmosphere of deepening distrust and hostility between the West and Russia as well as instability and fear in many European and Central Asian nations.

It is essential at this difficult juncture that the United States and our allies in Europe continue to stand ...read more
