Congress Honors Nelson Mandela
The former South African president turned 95 on July 18, 2013.
House Speaker John Boehner, along with leaders of the House and Senate, celebrated the 95th birthday of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former South African president Nelson Mandela in a ceremony at the Capitol Visitor Center’s Emancipation Hall on July 18, 2013.
“At times, it can almost feel like we’re talking about an old friend. And the reason for that, I think, is that scarcely a week—a day—goes by without us pointing to Mandela as an example,” Speaker Boehner said. “An example of standing on principle, of loving your neighbor, of extending the reach of freedom. All these ideals we cherish—he has lived closest to them.”
Members of Congress read selections from Mandela’s writings and speeches during the event.
