U.S. Service Academy Nominations

Members of Congress are authorized to nominate constituents for appointment to four of the nation’s five U.S. Service Academies. Each Member is allotted a limited number of nomination slots at each academy and may nominate qualified students for consideration.

While nomination processes vary by congressional office, most have a rigorous application and interview process managed by the district office. Details about the process, including eligibility requirements and deadlines, are typically outlined on the Member’s official website.

Students must also apply directly to the academies for admission. A congressional nomination is required for consideration at the U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and U.S. Air Force Academy for applicants seeking congressional nominations, but it does not guarantee an appointment (admission). The student must reside in the Member’s congressional district to be considered, except for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, which allows for Members to nominate from anywhere in their state. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy does not require congressional nominations.
